How to Study and Work with a Visitor Visa in Canada

According to US News & World Report (2019), in 2019, Canada ranked number one in the world for quality of living. Millions of people enter with a visitor visa in Canada each year, in fact, Canada welcomed 21.13 million visitors in 2018 alone (Shepert,2019). Furthermore, in 2019 around 341190 candidates received their Canadian permanent residency status (Duffin, 2020). Many are aware that study and work are the most cost-effective path to permanent residency. However, some might not want to invest their time and money in getting a permit from overseas. Without checking out the country by themselves. Therefore, many arrived with a Visitor Visa. However, visitor status has many limitations. In this blog, we will introduce how to study and work with a Visitor Visa in Canada.

Enroll in the EAP program

According to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), students are allowed to study in Canada as a visitor if the program lasts less than six months. Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs at Create Career College accept students with visitor visa status. Upon completion of the EAP program, students can directly enroll in Lakeland College without the need to submit IELTS scores. Lakeland College is a public college located in the province of Alberta; it is one of our newest academic partners.

Study and Work 

Upon receiving an offer letter from Lakeland College, students are eligible for a Study Permit. While holding a Study Permit, students are eligible to work up to 20 hours off-campus or on-campus per week when enrolled as full-time students. Some programs might include Co-operative Education, known as Co-op, where students can explore different career options by altering study semesters and paid work semesters. During the co-op semester, students can work up to 40 hours per week. The Co-op program provides students with more in-depth and extensive work experience, which can give students a competitive advantage in the job market over their peers.

After students complete their program at Lakeland College, they are eligible for applying for a Post-graduation work permit (PGWP).
