French Intermediate

This French intermediate-level course is tailored for students who have mastered the basics and are ready to elevate their fluency. The course focuses on expanding vocabulary, refining sentence structures, and building confidence in everyday conversations.

Through interactive lessons with engaging instructors, students will deepen their ability to communicate effectively in a variety of real-life scenarios, supported by exercises, quizzes, and online materials provided by the instructor. The course offers a dynamic French-speaking environment to enhance linguistic skills and cultural understanding, preparing students for more advanced study or practical use of the language.

French Intermediate Course details

Communicative Objectives

  • Describe past events and future plans.

  • Discuss shopping, prices, and basic transactions.

  • Share experiences, dreams, and aspirations.

  • Handle travel situations confidently (e.g., booking accommodations, asking for help).

  • Talk about familiar topics like work, school, and leisure activities.

  • Express opinions and preferences in more detail.

Linguistic Objectives

  • Conjugate verbs in the past tense (passé composé) and near future (futur proche).

  • Use demonstrative adjectives (ce, cette, ces) and pronouns (celui, celle, etc.).

  • Expand negation forms (ne…jamais, ne…plus, etc.).

  • Learn comparative and superlative structures (plus que, moins que, etc.).

  • Use direct and indirect object pronouns (le, la, lui, etc.).

  • Conjugate verbs in the imperfect tense (imparfait) for descriptions and habits.

  • Practice conditional sentences (si clauses) for hypothetical situations.

Expected Effort

Students are expected to commit approximately eight hours per week during the regular term, which includes attending classes and completing coursework and revisions. For intensive classes, this weekly time doubles to approximately sixteen hours to accommodate the accelerated pace of learning.

Text Book

The course uses “Grammaire Progressive du Français Débutant 3e Édition+CD” as its core textbook. All the course materials will be provided by the instructor.

Course Format

This course is offered online via Google Classroom, in-person at the Metrotown Campus in Burnaby, or in a hybrid format. 

  • The online option provides a virtual classroom experience that is interactive, with access to course materials available post-course, paired and group work.  
  • The in-person classes are held at the Metrotown Campus in Burnaby. 
  • The hybrid format offers flexibility, allowing students to choose to attend either in-person or online sessions based on their preferences or circumstances.

Assessment

Student progress is evaluated through in-class and after-class assignments, as well as quizzes and mock tests provided throughout the course. Feedback is given verbally during class sessions to support real-time improvement, and assignments are marked to provide clear indicators of performance and areas for growth.

Progress Evaluation

At the end of the course, the teacher will evaluate each student’s abilities individually through mock tests and quizzes to determine if they are ready to progress to the  advanced level.

A: According to TWA Immigration, RCIC-IRB, our School Consultant Partner, achieving NCLC 5 can help students fulfill the language requirements for various immigration programs, including the Francophone Mobility Program (Work Permit) and the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (PR Application). Additionally, improving French skills can lead to extra CRS points under Express Entry and even an invitation as a French-speaking candidate at NCLC 7+.
